iMovie is fantastic for basic stuff if you have a Mac. Not sure about free ones, but Final Cut, FC Express, and FC Pro are some of the best editors out there.

If you’re not editing much, and just organizing video, audio, and photos, its really all you need.
As for w/ a price, Vegas is quite nice.
